D. Pedro Afonso - Count of Barcelos

He was born around 1280 and he was son of the King D. Diniz and D. Graça Anes.
D. Pedro Afonso, one of the favourite sons of the King, born before the marriage with the Queen Saint Isabel (who was his guardian and strongly influenced his character) was a great genealogist and considered also the last Troubadour.

He marries D. Branca Peres, heir of the House of Sousa and becomes the honourable owner of Paços de Lalim. After he widowed, according to a Salzedas document, he marries D. Maria Ximenes, of the Royal House of Aragao.
D. Pedro, with his wisdom, spiritual and physic qualities, accompanies his father and the Queen in high state missions and he mediates the conflict between the Houses of Aragao and Castela. In 1307 he is nominated chief-administrator of the House of D. Beatriz of Castela, bride to be of his half-brother, D. Afonso natural heir of the throne.

As Count of Barcelos since March 1314, he intervenes in the quarrel between his father and his brother, D. Afonso. The King takes away all his titles and possessions, due to intrigues in the court carried out by his brothers and he forces him to exile in Castela. When he returns to Portugal (1321-1322) he intervenes again as a mediator of the quarrels between his father and his brother Afonso.
When his father dies he leaves the court and in Paço de Lalim he dedicates himself to hunting, writing – fairly known as “from Lalim”: Crónica Geral de Hespanha de 1344; Livro do Deão (unknown author); Livro de Linhagens; Livro das Cantigas.

He dies in Lalim in July 1354. In his funeral the tradition allies the Arches of Paradela. He rests in a magnificent granite tombstone with a recumbent statue in the Church of S. João de Tarouca Monastery.
