Aquilino Ribeiro

Aquilino Gomes Ribeiro was born in Carregal de Tabosa, municipality of Sernancelhe, district of viseu in 13th September 1885. With the purpose of being a priest, he went to the Jesuit School of Lapa, next to the Sanctuary with the same name and he went to the Seminary of Lamego, Viseu and Beja.

In 1906 he abandons his theology studies, goes live in Lisbon and he involves himself in the revolutionary anti-monarchic movement that lead to the regicide. An explosion in his bedroom, where two revolutionary people die, forces him to exile in Paris, where he attended Sorbonne.

In 1014 he returns to Portugal and begins teaching in Camões Highshcoll in Lisbon and he was consultant in the National Library. In 1927 and 1928 he was politically persecuted and arrested but he manages to flee and returns to Paris where he stays a few years until he gets back to his country.
His literary work is a hymn of love to his hometown, to the country man and to nature. And also a shout of freedman, based in his social being, impulsive and passionate, non-conformist with mediocrity and obscurity.

In the literary work of this rich author there is place for fiction, critique, biography, essay, ethnography, theatre and children’s stories. In every title we feel a taste of the revolt against social values that prevent the full expression of man.
He was one of the founders of Seara Nova.
He died in Lisbon in the 27th May 1963.
